Elevator 3 Way Intercom Set
What is an Elevator 3-Way Intercom Set?
It is a mandatory emergency voice communication safety system for passenger elevators, designed to connect 3 key locations in a building for emergency calls when the lift malfunctions (passengers trapped, power cut, breakdown).
The 3 communication terminals (the “3 ways”) are:
- Elevator Car Unit (Inside the lift cabin) – For trapped passengers
- Machine Room Unit (On elevator control cabinet) – For lift technicians/maintenance staff
- Main Control Host (Security / Property Duty Room) – Building security on-call staff
This system lets all three parties talk to each other at the same time, and it runs on backup power if the elevator’s main power fails.
All Standard Parts in a Complete Set
- Cabin Intercom Substation
Installed next to the floor button panel inside your stainless steel lift cabin. It has a big SOS emergency button, built-in speaker + mic, no handset needed for passengers.
- Machine Room Handset Unit
Wall-mounted beside the elevator controller; technicians pick this up to speak with the cabin and security during repairs or emergencies.
- Duty Room Main Master Station
Central control panel at the security office: shows which elevator is calling, rings loudly, has a handset, supports multiple elevators connected to one master unit.
- Support Accessories
Shielded communication cable, emergency UPS backup power, junction boxes, lightning protection.
Two common versions:
- Wired Bus Type (most reliable, used in new buildings)
- Wireless GSM Type (for old building renovations, no long wiring needed, forwards calls to mobile phones)
How It Works (Step-by-Step Operation)
Scenario 1: Passenger trapped inside elevator cabin (most common emergency)
- A rider stuck in the lift presses the red SOS emergency button on the cabin intercom panel.
- A signal instantly sends to both the machine room unit AND the security duty room main host.
- The master station in security office starts ringing, and displays the elevator number (e.g., Lift #3). The machine room handset also alerts with a ring tone.
- Security staff pick up the master handset, technicians can pick up the machine room handset.
- 3-way group audio chat opens automatically: Trapped passenger ↔ Security guard ↔ Lift technician can all speak and listen to one another simultaneously.
- Even if the elevator’s main power cuts out, the UPS backup power keeps the intercom working for hours. Staff can reassure the passenger and arrange rescue.
Scenario 2: Technician working in the machine room / lift shaft
- A maintenance worker picks up the machine room intercom handset and presses the call button.
- The signal connects to the cabin intercom and security host.
- The technician can communicate with anyone inside the lift cabin or notify security of maintenance work without walking to the duty room.
Scenario 3: Security staff initiates a check
Security can manually trigger a call from the duty room master station to any elevator cabin or machine room to test the system or check on passengers.
Key Core Working Features
- Simultaneous 3-party talk: Not one-to-one calling – all three locations share the same voice channel at once.
- Power failure standby: Independent backup power supply ensures communication when the lift loses mains power.
- Noise suppression: Built-in audio filters cut down lift motor/shaft background noise for clear speech.
- Fault self-detection: The main host alerts security if any cabin intercom or machine room unit stops working.
- Multi-lift compatibility: One single duty room master station can connect 10, 20, or more elevators in the same building.
Quick Difference: 3-Way vs 5-Way Intercom
- 3-Way: Cabin + Machine Room + Duty Room (basic legal requirement for all standard passenger lifts)
- 5-Way: Adds Car Top Unit + Pit Bottom Unit (required for high-rise, commercial, luxury elevators for full maintenance communication)
